Electrical Plans

Our electrical plans have been designed with a balance of capability and cost. Costs can quickly add up if you aren't smart about planning. Always consider what you have to do now vs after the build.

While I'm capable of running data, speaker and other low voltage cabling myself our builder naturally had fairly strict rules about this. We could have taken the opportunity to negotiate with the site supervisor during the build but it would be very disappointing if our request wasn't allowed and we ended up with nothing.

Some Tips

  • Outdoor Power Points: All outdoor power points obviously need to be weather proof. On some display homes the external power points in the alfresco are standard (non-weather proof) power points
  • Additional Circuits: Consider if additional costs could be added for extra circuits to cater for the volume of power points, separate circuits for HWS, Rain Tanks, Combined Heat/Light/Fans. In our case we needed 19 individuals circuits that required a sub board and additional cabling which added another $3000 to the electrical bill. Ouch.

Structured Cabling

The following diagram highlights the approach taken and outlines what cabling types are required to each location in the house.

  • Data Communications: CAT5e has been run to most rooms for future connectivity.
  • FTA (Free to Air): RG6 points have been distributed to all TV locations; the aerial will be terminated with the structured cabling and I will install a digital TV distribution head end.
  • Audio: General purpose speaker cabling has been distributed around the house to all required speaker locations i.e. famliy room, alfresco and the home theatre
  • Foxtel/Cable Internet: A RG6 point from the meter box to the structure cabling location will be installed for
  • NBN: Provision for the NBN customer premise equipment
  • PSTN Phone: Provision for a standard public switched telephony network point

Air Conditioning

Still Under Consideration

  • ZigBee vs Z-Wave: TBD Fibaro vs Ninja Sphere at this point
    • ZigBee :
    • Z-Wave :
  • Alarm: An alarm is installed but that's all you need to know. :)
